Summary

Etsy is a global marketplace for unique and creative goods, connecting independent sellers with buyers worldwide.

Sellers historically wait up to five business days to access their earnings, which limits their ability to manage cash flow and reinvest in their business. To modernize payments and empower sellers with more financial control and flexibility, I designed an instant payouts feature.

This feature launched as a controlled experiment. Early qualitative feedback has been largely positive and insightful, and upcoming data will guide segmentation, risk adjustments, and potential Etsy Plus (subscription program) integrations.

Seller feedback

"This means so much because I won't have to wait for Friday's orders to land in my bank account on Monday I can fulfill a lot faster without having to float our own money."

Learnings

Integrating Instant transfers into the broader disbursement system meant navigating constraints—balancing responsible transparency when system data was limited, and redefining legacy financial concepts to maximize clarity for sellers.

Additional challenges included finding the right level of abstraction, making thoughtful decisions around hierarchy and content, and experimenting with modern AI tools to quickly align partners on impactful interaction ideas.
